Il genere musicale detto blues è una forma di musica vocale e strumentale caratterizzata da una struttura di dodici battute, che vengono poi ripetute, e nella melodia dall'uso delle cosiddette blue note. Viene talvolta identificato come un genere musicale a sé stante. Sebbene ragtime, e spiritual non abbiano la stessa origine né la stessa storia del blues, questi tre stili musicali afroamericani si sono fortemente influenzati tra loro.
